Tourism—Vital to Our Area’s Economy!
Tourism is one of the top three industries in Wisconsin. Visitor spending supports thousands of jobs and generates millions in tax revenues, which, in turn provide for our citizens and needs.
Total visitor spending in Dane County for 2006 totaled $1.2 billion— an increase of 19.95 percent from 2005. This number made Dane County the second highest county in the State in total visitor expenditures (Milwaukee County remains the highest, with Sauk County coming in third).
The direct impact of 2006 visitor spending in the county helped to support an estimated 20,869 full-time equivalent jobs, and generated $340.70 million in resident income. The state government collected $67.8 million and local government collected $29.7 million in revenues that were directly attributable to traveler expenditures.
The Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) is the greater Madison area’s official destination marketing organization. The GMCVB is responsible for attracting new destination events to the community, as well as providing service and support to existing and repeat events, and providing comprehensive information to visitors to the area.
The GMCVB operates under a traditional organizational structure, but the majority of our programs and activities involve cross-departmental teams and/or members and other friends of our industry.
